Food waste prevention

Principles against food waste.

EU produce 90 million tonnes of food waste/year. These foods were not used and consumed. Producers, sellers and households damage them for various reasons as waste. There is unnecessarily spoiled food (waste) or still consumable food (food, not waste). How prevent to food waste in our homes?

  • Look your storage and create plan for completion before shopping.
  • Small amount of fresh food add several times a week.
  • The oldest food in the fridge and in the pantry give in the front.
  • Preferably consume foods with expiring usability and durablity.
  • Take care to the correct preservation of food (damp/dry, room temperature/cold, light/dark).
  • Distinguish between usability (sell by date, use by date - ) and minimum durability (best before date - food is still eatable after printed expiration date).
  • Immediately eliminate moldy food.
  • Prepare optimal portions and buy only as much as you are able to eat.
  • Use food scraps (including freezing).
  • Occasionally exhaust long-term food storage.
